Mayor Leads Panel on Journalism in the Age of Fake News

Thousand Oaks Library Hosts Discussion on Contemporary Journalism

What is considered newsworthy? Can you trust what you read, see, and hear? On Thursday, October 12 at 6:30 p.m., the Grant R. Brimhall Library will host a panel discussion on contemporary news gathering and how it influences what we see, hear, and understand about our world. The panel will be moderated by Thousand Oaks Mayor and former journalist, Claudia Bill de la Pena.

The panel discussion is just one event in the 11th annual, month-long, Thousand Oaks Reads One City, One Book program, offering an opportunity for a community wide exploration of literature. This year’s title, News of the World, by Paulette Jiles, explores the life of an itinerant news reader who travels through post-Civil War Texas, delivering the news of the world.

The Mayor will be joined by a distinguished panel of contemporary journalists, including Lance Orozco, news director for local National Public Radio affiliate, KCLU; Ron Kaye, former editor of The Los Angeles Daily News; William MacFayden, founder and publisher of Noozhawk.com; Wendy Leung, reporter for the Ventura County Star; and Brian Thoms, assistant professor of computer science at California State University, Channel Islands.

Topics include the influence of social media on news gathering and journalism, the use of bots or automated campaigns to promote viewpoints, safeguards to vet news stories, and how can we improve our skills as news consumers and producers. Audience members will be able to submit written questions during the event.
