Throughout history, the United States has entered into treaties designed to promote free-trade. These agreements typically reduce or eliminate tariffs other trade restrictions. The treaties also provide means to resolve trade disputes through international courts that specialize in such matters. Of late, the United States has justified the imposition of tariffs on a wide range of goods by stating that our national security is being threatened. Our trading partners have responded in kind. Will these trade restrictions make our country safer? Can we negotiate better terms with our trading partners? Will tariffs protect American jobs? Who wins and who loses in a trade war?
