California-American Water Co, which serves about 45% of the city in the Newbury Park area, every 3 years goes through a process with the Calif Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to raise water rates. The process started last summer when Cal Am filed an application with the CPUC. The application includes an option to consolidate costs and revenues with several other water systems in LA and San Diego. The proposed rate increase for Newbury Park would be about 32% over 3 years for the consolidation option, and 15% without consolidation. Higher imported water costs would be added to these figures, expected to be 9% over 3 years.
The CPUC will host a public participation hearing on Tuesday, January 17th, 6:00 pm at the Palm Garden Hotel on Ventu Park Rd. All Cal Am customers in Newbury Park were mailed a notice for this meeting, and the Thousand Oaks Acorn ran a story this past Thursday. City staff will attend the meeting and will provide a detailed update report to City Council at the January 24th council meeting.
