Free Online Learning Courses

The Online Learning courses are not a part of theLibrary eResources, but are freely available on the Internet. The resources listed were selected by Thousand Oaks librarians because they provide valuable information and are useful for learning digital skills.

Memory Lab

The Memory Lab is a space for free, do-it-yourself digitization of video, sound recordings, and other media, located at the Grant R. Brimhall Library. Many analog formats, such as VHS and film negatives, degrade over time and need to be digitized before the recordings are lost. In the Memory Lab, you can digitize VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, photographic film slides, and film reels (Regular 8mm and Super 8mm). Check out our Memory Lab FAQs for more information.

How It Works:

1. Submit your interest in using the Memory Lab by filling out the Memory Lab Interest Form.
2. After submitting the form, you will receive an email with a link to an online training.
3. After completion of the training, a library staff member will reach out and work with you to set up a date and time for your Memory Lab session. 
4. When you arrive for your session, you will be required to sign a waiver before using the digitization equipment. 
5. Each session is up to 2.5 hours in order for you to become familiar with the equipment and to review the instructions.

How It Works:

1. Call us at 805-449-2660, option 4, or 805-498-2139, option 3 ; go to any service counter at the library; contact us through Ask-A-Librarian , or make an appointment online .
2. Each patron is allowed 3 appointmentsover a two month period.
3. All requests must be made at least 3 business days before the appointment date .
4. Patrons must provide a valid phone number or email address . Please let the staff member know if you do not have an email address. After making the appointment, you should receive an email confirming the date, location, and time of the appointment.
5. If you need to cancel, you may let a staff member know over the phone, in person, or through Ask-A-Librarian. You can also cancel using a link from your email confirmation of the appointment.
